Architects - the true GOD of amazing buildings and structures. The great landmarks of the modern world would not have been possible without them. Considered as one the charming professions and looked as a career option for elite class students, architecture field has been visiting numerous changes happening in the last couple of decades where demographic set up of students from varied countries,states, social background, disciplines, and streams have come to join Architecture colleges. Architect
Architects work with engineers, technicians and clients to design safe, functional and aesthetically pleasing structures ranging from dams to homes. To pursue B.Arch in IIT or NIT colleges, the students are suppose to undertake IIT – JEE ( Mains ) Paper – 2 for the NIT admissions & IIT – JEE ( Advanced) for IIT admissions.After completing B.Arch graduation or during the time of graduation in Architecture, candidates can do an internship/training program either with some practicing architects or with an architecture firm to gain practical experience and better up job prospects & learn the current markets, styles, materials & trends in architecture of varied region.

About Bachelor Of Architecture (B.Arch.)
The Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) is a five year undergraduate program in Architecture, design and structure of building covering the sociological, systematic and environmental aspects. It is framed to satisfy the academic component of professional accreditation bodies, to be followed by a period of practical training prior to professional examination and registration. It is awarded for a course of study that lasts up to five years. In India, five year B.Arch course is offered by various schools in India. These schools are recognized by council of architecture (coa) and are affiliated to various Universities.

Architects design not just structures, they design an experience for a user with the space volume & the function related with the space, thereby giving a physical face-lift as well as provide functional utility, Aesthetical sence,safety and economy.
The job of an architect is not limited to designing just the volumes of spaces & not just the corporate offices.Rather they design houses, apartments and colonies, industrial complexes, airport terminals,Parks, hospitals, hotels, memorials, stadium, shopping and commercial complexes, schools, colleges, Museums, Theme parks etc. Architects focus on how to make living sensible, interesting,easy and comfortable for people ranging from economically weaker section to lower-middle class & extending up to the upper-class and offer them housing and shelter with luxury, image and style within their budgets. Moreover, increased demand for luxury accommodation that is more interesting, beneficial & attractive on basis of commercials & generating landmarks from certain section of people drives architects to work on special building designs which fulfill the specific requirements. The last century saw tremendous growth in scope of architectural designs. Though architects have been in existence since time immemorial,latest trends,modern styles with new concepts and designs with implementation of hyper - technological inputs has increased in last century only. What would it Cost Me to study B.Arch?
Various autonomous,government – aided, private colleges and Deemed universities in India offer B.Arch course which lasts for 5 years. The fee of the course depends entirely upon the reputation of the institute or its aid from the government. Similarly, the fee structure varies based on your type of admission, whether through the government counseling or Management seat . The direct government colleges charges a nominal fee of Rs.40,000/Year – Rs.55,000 /Year.The government affiliated institutes or colleges charge a medium range of fee from students, which can be any amount in the ranges between Rs. 80,000/year – Rs. 1,35,000/year. While in private institute & most of the deemed universities,or management seats may demand a hefty fee between 1,35,000/year- Rs.4,50,000/Year based on the demand & reputation. The fee does not include expenses incurred in the form of hostel charges, transportation fees, library fees,studio fees, Stationery fees etc. Candidates who could not make out to degree level education in Architecture colleges may opt for a 3 1/2 year Architecture diploma course ( Architecture assistantship) where in they may be asked to pay any fee in the range from Rs.5000/year – Rs.10,000/year if in government colleges & about Rs.30,000/year – Rs.50,000/year in other private polytechnic colleges. However, the Architecture diploma holders are not termed as “Architects” & they can only work under an Architect as assistants & are not authorized to either sign the approval drawings nor practice individually in the name of Architects. But ,there is a opportunity for them to upgrade themselves to Architects through an extended course & examination under IIA ( Indian institutes of Architects)

Eligibility Criteria For B. Arch
The minimum qualification required for applying in a B. Arch course is plus two with 50% in the board examination. The students should study Mathematic as a subject in their 10+2. To get admission for the B. Arch program, the aspirants are required to take the either of the two Entrance exams i.e J.E.E -B.Arch for IIT’s and NIT’s or NATA (National Aptitude Test In Architecture) conducted by the Council of Architecture (COA) For all the Architecture colleges except IIT’s and NIT’s. The students are allotted to different colleges based on their entrance exam scores and their 10+2 exam marks.
Admission Procedure For B. Arch
The B. Arch aspirants can apply for various entrance tests conducted by respective institutes and various universities in the nation. Mainly the national level exams are common for the Engineering as well as the B. Arch aspirants. The students will be given an option to choose their priorities. The private institution also carries out their own entrance tests and one of the most important things for the B. Arch aspirates is that most of the institution considers NATA exam score along with the aptitude test conducted by the individual institutes.

B.Arch Course
Architecture is a great field of study for those who are artistically talented and interested in creative design and the built environment. The course seeks the students having skills like drawing, writing, exploration of the given topic, practical and managerial ability in identifying and solving problems and architectural presentation etc. The subjects for the Bachelor of Architecture include Mathematics, CADD, Urban Economics and Sociology History of Architecture and Interior Design etc.
The first two years of the program prepare students in the fields of Basic design, Architectural drawing and computer applications. Computer integration in the design studios is emphasized in the second year. Architects can work with construction companies, or other senior architects firms where they are asked to serve as a designer. Initially an architect is expected to understand the pre-requisites of clients and strike a right balance between function & aesthetics. • Architect: Literally an architect is someone who has got training from an architecture institute on the planning, design and oversight of the construction of buildings. Generally, architects are licensed to practice architecture. An architect either can work independently or for some architecture company or real estate developing firm.
• Architecture Designer: Architecture designers are the professionals who are involved in designing houses and other small buildings. However, these are not registered like an architect but perform various jobs such as designing buildings, designing light-frame buildings including of family homes, agricultural buildings, etc. Some additional duties for architecture designers may include designing of decorative facades malls or big to small sized buildings.
• Architecture Engineer: These professionals have dual qualification of architect and a civil engineer. Bestowed with the duty to provide the services of an architect and engineer, such professionals have attractive demand in job market.
• Interior Designer: Contrary to general belief that the career in interior designing belongs to women, men found it attractive and do courses in interior designing, interior decor, etc. Trained professionals can work with interior designing firms offering services in serene interiors, home interior, bedroom interior, bathroom interior, kitchen, furniture designing, etc.

What To Do After B. Arch?
Various colleges offer undergraduate course in B.Arch. which lasts for 5 years. As previously quoted,the selection is done through an entrance exam(NATA Exam 2015) conducted by the Council of Architecture throughout India. Also, some private colleges and Deemed Universities offering B.Arch courses in architecture have their own criteria which are based on +2 marks of students & may conduct an aptitude entrance exam separately within their university limits & include it as the filtering criteria to admit students in to the B.Arch Courses. Students interested to specialize their knowledge in architecture can pursue post-graduation in architecture for two years.For an Architecture graduate there are mainly two opportunities, to work with any firm or to select further studies. An architecture graduate can work with both public and private entities. They can work with Railways, Postal and telegraph department, private firms like L&T,DLF,Reliance,Sahara group, Gammon India, Aeons Constructions etc.

Funding/Scholarship
Aga Khan Foundation offers a limited number of scholarships for students of Architecture who are willing to pursue higher education. The scholarship is given to the outstanding students from India who have no other means of financing their studies. According to the guidelines issued by the trust, the scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant:50% loan basis. Applications are invited once a year in June or July and students with excellent academic records, genuine financial need, admission to a reputable institution of higher learning, etc. only are eligible for the scholarship.
60 National Overseas Scholarships are offered to students belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, De-notified Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes, etc. US$6,600 per year is the amount which is paid to qualified candidates doing the Masters. However, PhD candidates can get US $7,700 per year. There are other scholarships which are being offered to unprivileged meritorious students in various government aided institutes. Besides toppers, candidates who top in entrance exams conducted by the private institutes receive attractive discounts in fees. Education loans are available to students from nationalized banks and private banks at attractively low interest rates.
Demand and supply of Architect professionals in India.
In India.there are more than 200 colleges which impart education in Architecture especially for undergraduate programmes. In that first stands the state of Maharashtra , second is Tamil nadu , third is Karnataka. Despite of about 10,000 architects graduating every year, there is acute shortage of trained architects who can fulfill the current requirement. Moreover, the mismatch of supply and demand is expected to widen up as development in economy, people’s spending capacity,urbanization, industrialization and the increased need for accommodation of all types is coming up in big way. Private construction companies require trained & talented architects who can carry out various construction projects and for that these companies are willing to pay hefty salaries.Therefore, to fit – in to such high category of jobs, an architecture student has to take up the 5 years of B.Arch course with utmost interest, passion & sincerity shown towards self – refining in terms of creativity, detailing, current trends, materials, technology, new concepts, rates, estimating & accounting, Problem solving skill,Presentation & communication.
Opportunities for trained & qualified architects
According to current demand for architects, a survey says that India needs more than 10,000 trained professionals in various government and private organizations. Whereas qualified architects coming from top notch architecture colleges are placed in various construction and real estate developing companies. On the other side,the government jobs are filled by various examinations conducted each year at the national level. Major attraction working with such architecture companies is that candidates receive attractive salary packages and other perquisites. Dubai,America, Bangkok, Singapore, England,Shanghai, Kuala Lumpur, Mumbai, Bangalore, kolkatta, chennai and many other cities changing in terms of high rise towers and the architects have played crucial role in it. A great demand is coming up for architects specialised in urban designing, regional planning, etc.
Besides the architects who have done some specialization course in building engineering and management, architectural conservation, industrial design, landscape architecture, naval architecture, architecture concerning traffic and transport planning etc. too have bright career prospects in the USA and other western developing countries which are looking for sustainable development and settlement. Most of the overseas jobs in architecture come from private sector real estate developers who are looking to carve a niche with the help of design and planning.
Remuneration after B. Arch
After earning a B.Arch degree, the graduate has to register with the architects council of the country in order to gain the eligibility to practice.For example, all indian students have to register with COA ( council of architects), only by being a register member of the COA, an architect is permitted to practice the profession independently or under any firm.
An Architect fresher salary can be in the range of INR 20,000 to 30,000. The growth is registered after 2+ years. Architect Candidates with work experience of more than 5 years can get salary in the range of INR 50,000/month to 60,000/month. The salary package of an Architect depends on the size of the firm, the project he/she handling, Client and also the experience in the field. Salary of more experienced architects in India ranges from Rs.1-3laks/Month. There are private firms like DLF, L&T, Eros Group where the salary package of an architect’s varies from Rs 1-15lakhs/Annum. Moreover, when mammoth investment from government and private real estate developers is coming up, a huge crunch of trained architects is being felt. The starting salary can be even higher than average Indian salary if the candidate is from premier architecture college. According to some sources, projection of architects stands over 10,000.
The demand for architects in india is expected to increase in next couple of decades as India is going to expand FDI (foreign direct Investment) in real estate and it will attract huge money from foreign companies especially in departments of Infrastructure.
Positives/Negatives
Career in Architecture has its own pros & cons. Whereas negatives are not as such the negatives of architecture field but it holds good for any promising independent career like doctors , lawyers e.t.c who mostly feel a sense of insecurity, job pressure, odd hours of working, too much expectations, etc.
Positives such as higher salaries, Non – Monotonous working nature, growth prospect,Power of command, individual identity, Creative vision,international exposure, etc. are tempting elements to choose a career in architecture and Planning. Ambitious & talented architects have higher job prospects in architecture companies, provided they are willing to change their location and do not have preferences in terms of work location as real estate companies have become global and have global operations.
Survival of Fittest in Architecture field
The top most priority for an architect should be to get an on-the-job training. An on-the-job training provides much needed exposure to candidates to get practical hand in architecture and job in an architecture company. Additionally, asking for association with practicing architects works well to get a breakthrough in career for the reason that candidate gets practical experience by doing day to day activities with an architect. Internship programs with architects, structural engineers, or building designers help in enriching the profile which ultimately benefits candidate to get a job. Similarly, candidates should start building a portfolio with working drawings for design projects; the same can be shown during interview to mark credibility. A certification can be of added advantage to get a job in an architecture company.
